Can I Rent a Car with a Debit Card?

Can I rent a car with a debit card? This is a question asked by people who either don't want to use a credit card or who don't have one. The answer is that sometimes you can and sometimes you can't. Here is a chart at No Credit Needed that lets you know which companies will allow you to use a debit card and which won't.

As a general matter, while you can pay for a rented car with a debit card, you may need to have a credit card at the time of the rental.

With most major car rental companies, there are a number of different options for payment once the rental has been completed. Many of them, however, require you to have a valid credit card at the signing of the rental agreement, and they usually put a "hold" on your credit card. This is requred so that they can assure themselves that payment will be made if the car is returned late, or damaged in any way.

This is only a temporary hold agreement however, and when you return the vehicle to the rental agency, they will gladly accept virtually any payment source you have. You can also choose to have the rental fees applied to the credit card that you provided them with at the time the agreement was signed, so long as it’s your credit card.

Why Rental Agencies Usually Require Credit Cards

The reason the rental agency requires the use of a credit card at the time of the agreement is to make sure that they will be paid, and also because they want to be able to make sure the card you provide is valid without actually applying the charge to it immediately. If you were to use your debit card, the charge would be immediate and the rental would be finalized

The rental agency doesn’t want to do this because the rental contract doesn’t actually impose the charge until you return the vehicle and the vehicle’s condition can be examined.
