Where can I Get a Free Carfax?

Where can I get a free Carfax?  The best and only place to get a free Carfax is to get one from the car dealer who is selling your car. Otherwise, you are going to have to pay for the Carfax.

Any time you’re considering the purchase of a used vehicle, one of the best ways to make sure that you’re getting everything you’re promised is through checking the vehicle's Carfax.

  • A Carfax is an informational document that is specific to the particular vehicle.
  • You can obtain one of these documents as long as you have the vehicle’s identification number (VIN number).
  • You can obtain your Carfax report through the Carfax website.

It should be noted, however, that a Carfax report is NOT free. However, if you’re buying the vehicle from a licensed used car dealer, your prospective dealer should provide you with one at no charge upon your request.

Why Buy a Carfax?

Now that you know you can't get a free Carfax unless you buy from a dealer, you may wonder if or why you should ever buy one.

  • If you’re buying from a private seller, you can use the vehicle’s identification number and enter it into the Carfax website’s database.
  • By purchasing a Carfax, you’ll be able to learn much more about the car.
  • Any major accidents, liens, or insurance claims that have been made on the vehicle matching your entered VIN number will be available to view.

If you are uncertain of any of the information given about the vehicle, you may contact the DMV in the state the vehicle was last registered in to make sure that the information given is accurate.
