A Closer Look: Definition of Recreation

Taking time away from work or school to rejuvenate yourself is a necessary practice to guard yourself from burnout. One of the most common and effective methods of doing this is to engage in some form of recreation. Recreation is defined as any activity that allows the body, mind and or spirit to rest and recover from hard work. The hard work doesn’t have to be physical in nature, it can also be hard mental work or very tiring emotional work.

While you likely feel tired and drained after periods of intense labor, you can recover your energies by taking some time to engage in something you enjoy, such as a hobby, your favorite sport or other pastime.

The ability to escape from the hectic pace of life and find rest in one of your favorite activities is healthy and wise. When you engage in a favorite activity, you are able to temporarily put aside the aspects of your jobs or lives that so consume you. By stepping aside from the stress of every day life, you can relax and gain a fresh perspective on the situations that you face. Examples of Recreation

Watching television is one of the largest leisure or recreational activities in the US. Technology has advanced from the advent of the first television and made television watching a much more enjoyable experience.

Television has progressed from its introduction as a black and white picture to a medium on which you can view broadcasts in full high definition color. It has also grown from only three or four broadcast channels to cable services offering more than a hundred different channels. Special topic channels now exist to meet the varied interests of the viewer.

As the computer age progresses, analog transmission signals for the available channels are changing and transmission is now done by digital signals that provide clearer and more detailed pictures. With this switch to a digital format, people can get access to even more television shows and features.

Some people also enjoy collecting old movies, series episodes or merely saving the weekly episode of a show to view later. The VCR and DVD have made it possible to record broadcasts for later viewing and the DVR has made it simpler than anyone could have ever imagined. Viewers can now control television and watch what they want, when they want.  The combination of the television industry and the video game industry has brought the entertainment of the video arcade right into the home. The XBOX, Wii, and Nintendo units have the ability to connect to your home television and provide arcade action to both young and old. This home availability has caused the video game industry to boom and created another popular form of recreation. Even the old-fashioned trip to the theater to see the latest movie has drastically changed, as services have made it possible to have the latest releases delivered directly to your door, where you can hold a family movie night right in the home. Regardless of how the television is used, it has become a very accessible means of recreation.

Importance of Recreation

Recreational activities have been cited by the medical industry as an important ingredient for a long life. In fact, some medical experts suggest recreation is as important as eating a healthy diet and getting enough exercise.

Recreational activities have the ability to help you deal with stress in your life by changing the focus of your attentions from those stressful situations. When you are able to reduce the stress in your life, you can recuperate and regain your energy. The escape that recreation provides to every part of your being lets you relax; takes your mind off tensions that may exist and lets you enjoy life a bit more. Recreation is meant to be enjoyable. You should find things that provide you with fun and leisure. The fun part of recreation is that anything can qualify, even sitting at your kitchen table laughing with a friend. Often the recreation that you choose will involve more people and thus give you the opportunity to have a good time with those you care about. Some recreation, such as sports, may require work or effort, but it is a different type of work or effort than that required in your job or daily life.  Develop a list or things that you can turn to when you need to find some recreation. Having a list may help you find the time for some of the rest and relaxation you so desperately need.
