What Is the Definition of Science Fiction?

The definition of science fiction often when classifying movies or books.  Quite simply, science fiction applies to a particular genre of work that is a subset of the general fiction genre.

The dictionary defines science fiction as

"fiction of a highly imaginative or fantastic kind, typically involving some actual or projected scientific phenomenon."

It can generally be said that science fiction is a sub-type of fiction in which elements of sciences are used to create an engaging story.

Sci-Fi Versus Fantasy

Although many classify science fiction as a part of fantasy, this association is not necessarily a correct one.

  • Stories of fantasy are generally entirely created from the imagination of an author or film producer. It doesn't necessarily have to be based in theoretical or actual scientific concepts or relate directly to science.
  • Science fiction is a story that is created in the mind of an author or movie producer which is more directly related to science. Often, sci-fi stories are stories of events that could potentially happen in the future if technology evolves.

Essential Elements of Sci-Fi

Part of the definition of sci-fi involves looking at what makes a good science fiction story. English Teacher's Friend sets forth some elements that are generally found in a good work of science fiction

  • The first element focuses on the setting for the book or movie. For example, the story may be set in the future, occur during alternative timelines, or occur at some point in history that contradicts the knowledge of history that we know today. The setting may also be in outer space, on other planets, or a story that involves a race from another world.
  • The story generally also has to have some sort of unique, odd or advanced technology (like technology that could exist in the future) and/or the people involved have to have special and unique powers or be out-of-the-ordinary (like aliens).
  • There must be a hero, a villain, a problem and a resolution.
  • Science must be related to the story.
